Search Help

To find information about a topic, simply type in a few keywords. The more detailed your query, the more relevant your results.

Our search engine also comes with some advanced capabilities to help you find exactly what you're looking for. These capabilities are best shown with a few examples:

+stone +circle Translated: require stone, require circle

Finds "stone circle" and "circle of stone"
Does not find "stonecircle", nor "stone circles"

+stone -circle Translated: require stone, forbid circle
Finds "stone avenue" and "walls of stone"
Does not find "circles", nor "stone circle"
or stone and circle Translated: prefer stone, require circle
Finds "full circle", "Stone circle" and "stone circle"
Documents with both terms appear higher in the list
"stone circle" Translated: require the phrase "stone circle"
Finds "stone circle"
Does not find "stone", nor "stone circles"
and stone and circle* Translated: require stone, require words starting with "circle"
Finds "stone circle" and "stone circles"
The asterisk is a wildcard representing any four or fewer characters
not stone and circle and kerb or henge Translated: require circle, require kerb, forbid stone, prefer henge
First lists "kerb circle or henge" then "kerb circle"
Does not list "stone circle" nor "stone henge"
Where is the *henge*? Translated: ignores common words like "where", "is", "the", require words containing "henge"
Finds "henge" and "circle henge" and "Stonehenge"
To suppress the ignore feature, use quotes, a in "Where is the *henge*?"

Note on case sensitivity - only words or phrases containing an upper case character will be treated as case sensitive. A search on "usa" will match "Usa", "USA", and "usA", while the term "USA" matches only its uppercase version.

The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words - that is, the query "sear*help" would not match the first sentence of this paragraph - and it can represent at most four letters or numbers. To avoid overly broad searches, the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters. A search for "th*" would be ignored.
