Learable
Hill
STONE
ROWS, STANDING STONE, CAIRNS, STONE CIRCLE |
A
complex ritual site, on the crest of Learable Hill in Strath of Kildonan
(Sutherland). Hidden in the heather there are three or four groups of stone
rows (the photo shows one of the northern group, consisting of two parallel
rows of stones, aligned east-west about 38m in length). Further to the north
there are another two parallel stone rows and to the south there is a fan-shaped
arrangement of at least nine rows.
The most visible feature of the site is a 1.6m tall standing stone, bearing
on its west face an incised cross. Around it there are two or three burial
cairns.
Ninety metres WNW of the stone there are the five surviving uprights of
an elliptical stone circle (NC 891 235). |
