The
broch is on a promontory on Loch of Houlland (Shetland). An outer bank and
two lines of defensive walls were built on the neck of the promontory and
another wall guards access from the loch. It is now ruined and filled with
stones fallen from its walls.
There are traces of buildings between the broch and its outer defences.
Two causeways link the broch to an adjacent island and from the island to
the mainland (a part of the latter is visible in the lower right corner
of the photo). They could have been used to save livestock.
