This
L-shaped and now roofless souterrain was discovered during ploughing in
1949 and then excavated in 1950-51. It is one of the largest in Scotland
and the longest in Angus (42.6m in length). There are four entrances and
a narrow passage that joins the main underground gallery.
The purpose of the souterrain is unknown, but excavations suggest a possible
use as store-room for grain or shed for cattle or sheep. Excavations revealed
also a settlement of at least eight surface huts. In care of Historic Scotland
