KERBED CAIRN (STONE CIRCLE)
Auchagallon image

Fifteen slabs set in a circle on a terrace above the west coast of Arran. They are probably the remains of a kerbed cairn.
The stones, from 0.5m to 2.3m tall, are graded in height with five large stones to the west (on the right of the photo). The boulders are of red sandstone with the exception of two grey granite slabs.
To the west a low boulder is flanked by two taller stones like the recumbent stone circles in Grampian. According to Aubrey Burl, "the setting could be a variant form of recumbent stone circle".
